UPDATE, Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1:09 p.m.: As of shortly after 1 p.m., the Times website appears to be back online.
The site was restored shortly after the paper reported via Twitter that it believed the outage was the result of “an internal issue, which we expect to be resolved soon.” Meanwhile, the paper posted key news stories on its Facebook page.
Original post: The New York Times’ website went down around 11:30 a.m. eastern today and remains inaccessible as of 12:55 p.m.. The reason for the outage is not yet clear, though Fox Business cited an anonymous source saying the paper was dealing with a cyberattack.
The paper’s main Twitter account reported only the following: “The New York Times Web site is experiencing technical difficulties. We expect to be back up shortly.”
The company’s newspaper and corporate sites also appeared to be unreachable. Emails sent to New York Times email addresses were returned as undeliverable.
In what may be an unrelated issue, Microsoft Outlook is also experiencing technical difficulties. “We’re having a problem accessing email,” Microsoft reported via its Outlook status site Wednesday morning.
Earlier this year, the Times disclosed that it had been the target of ongoing cyberattacks from hackers in China, possibly stemming from its coverage of Chinese officials and their families.
