Next week marks the opening of the high court’s 2017 term, so Dahlia Lithwick speaks with David Cole, national legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, about some of the cases in the upcoming term, including Trump’s travel ban, gay couples versus religious dissenters, and more.

Cole also notes that citizen activism is more alive than he’s seen before, something he discusses in his book, now out in paperback, Engines of Liberty: How Citizen Movements Succeed.
