Regardless of whether you think it disqualified her from the presidency vis a vis Donald Trump, it is hard to argue that it was not careless of Hillary Clinton to store classified information on a low-security private email server while she was Secretary of State. And in an exchange with Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy during today’s Judiciary Committee hearing, FBI director James Comey revealed further details about the depths of Clinton’s operational-security ineptitude. The discussion concerned emails that were famously found just before last November’s election on the computer of disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner, who is married to (and may or may not be estranged from) longtime Clinton adviser Huma Abedin:
KENNEDY: Was there classified information on former congressman Weiner’s computer?
KENNEDY: Who sent it to him?
COMEY: His then-spouse, Huma Abedin, had emails forwarded to him to print out for her so she could deliver them to the Secretary of State.
KENNEDY: Did former congressman Weiner read the classified material?
COMEY: I don’t think so. I don’t think we have been able to interview him because he has pending criminal problems of other sorts. But my understanding is that his role would be to print them out as a matter of convenience.
Comey went on to explain that Weiner and Abedin were not prosecuted for this lapse because they did not knowingly put sensitive information at risk. And yet … has there ever been a more obvious blackmail target in human history than Anthony “Penis” Weiner? Should there maybe a “Bad Idea Jeans” clause in the classified-material statutes?
