Though records on the Madison-Pinckney election of 1808 remain sketchy, it seems likely this is the first time in American history that a major political party has been forced to reckon with its presidential candidate saying he grabs women by the pussy. As Emma Roller notes on Twitter, a whole bunch of GOP luminaries have said they can’t abide Donald Trump’s 2005 hot-mic ain’t-sexual-assault-grand Access Hollywood yukfest, but not so many have followed up by yanking their support for the Republican nominee.
One exception: Jason Chaffetz. On Friday night, the Utah congressman told Salt Lake City’s Fox 13, “I’m out.”
Chaffetz cited his teenage daughter as the main reason he decided to get off the Trump train:
I can no longer in good conscience endorse this person for president. It is some of the most abhorrent and offensive comments that you can possibly imagine. My wife and I, we have a 15-year-old daughter, and if I can’t look her in the eye and tell her these things, I can’t endorse this person.
You can watch the full interview here, wherein Chaffetz addresses whether he’ll be voting for Clinton, a woman he thinks “should probably be in handcuffs.”
I’m not gonna vote for Hillary Clinton. There’s no way. Under no scenario.
OK, we believe you!
