Dr. Jack Kevorkian, aka Dr. Death, has passed away at the age of 83.
Kevorkian, a pathologist based in Michigan, firmly believed in a person’s right to choose when to die and assisted in over 100 suicides of terminally ill patients during the 1990s. He was convicted of second-degree murder in 1999 and served eight years in prison.
Critics and supporters alike agree his attention to a very taboo subject helped vastly improve hospice care in the United States, but his methods and blunt style made him a polarizing figure.
Kevorkian passed away after being hospitalized for a kidney ailment and pneumonia.
