Happy 5th Birthday, Twitter! The wildly popular microblogging service has come a long way since co-founder Jack Dorsey first tweeted, “just setting up my twttr,” back on March 21, 2006.
How far? It took more than 38 months to reach 1illion tweets. Now, Twitter’s 190 million users create 1 billion of the 140 character-or-less posts in a week. The huge volume of “what I had for breakfast” updates and banal observations from the likes of Ashton Kutcher and Britney Spears make Twitter an easy target.
But Twitter has also been a communications hub for anti-government uprisings in Iran and Egypt. And by some accounts, the company now has a market value of nearly $10 billion. Oh, and it recently welcomed the “winning” Charlie Sheen to its user ranks.
