Charles Krauthammer: The Unforgivable Thing About Arrogant, Ugly, Corrupt, Unserious Liberals Is Their Contempt for People Who Disagree With Them

Charles Krauthammer has let it be known that he is rooting against the Democrats this fall. Why? Because he’s been in the bag for the Republican Party for years? Well, yes, but this time around, he has a moral purpose. He is enraged by the disrespect that liberals (“and their vast media auxiliary”) have been showing toward their political opponents:

– Resistance to the vast expansion of government power, intrusiveness and debt, as represented by the Tea Party movement? Why, racist resentment toward a black president.

– Disgust and alarm with the federal government’s unwillingness to curb illegal immigration, as crystallized in the Arizona law? Nativism.

– Opposition to the most radical redefinition of marriage in human history, as expressed in Proposition 8 in California? Homophobia.

– Opposition to a 15-story Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero? Islamophobia.

How dare these snobs suggest that Islamophobia has anything to do with why people who don’t live in Manhattan are so eager to bar Muslims from worshiping there? Or from worshiping in Murfreesboro, Tennessee ? Or from serving on the Supreme Court ? How pathetic and deluded are liberals to believe that Republicans—41 percent of whom say they are literally unable to believe that Barack Obama was born in this country —are opposed to the president for any reason other than honest disagreement over government policy?

This insistence on searching for base motives, Krauthammer writes, is “a measure of the corruption of liberal thought.” The fact that real, ordinary Americans despise the elite program, the Oxford- and Harvard-educated columnist for the Washington Post writes, is too damaging for the liberal psyche to confront:

a comeuppance is due the arrogant elites whose undisguised contempt for the great unwashed prevents them from conceding a modicum of serious thought to those who dare oppose them.

So if the American people, in their wisdom, do what Charles Krauthammer wants them to do and throw out their divisive, power-mad Democratic rulers this fall, the Republicans will get down to the business of governing with humility and respect for their opponents, just to show how it’s done. Right? What’s that you say , Politico?

Republicans are planning a wave of committee investigations targeting the White House and Democratic allies if they win back the majority.

And a handful of aggressive would-be committee chairmen — led by Reps. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Lamar Smith (R-Texas) — are quietly gearing up for a possible season of subpoenas not seen since the Clinton wars of the late 1990s.
