There is a serious movement in Ohio to draft Jerry Springer as a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate. Springer–best known for his vulgar, no-holds-barred daytime talk show–is a former mayor and city council member of Cincinnati. Supporters say he could mobilize black and Gen-X voters like no other candidate. Detractors–including Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle–say he’s a disgrace. In 1998, David Plotz described Springer’s regression from idealistic public servant to nihilistic freak circus master.
