Staff Writer, Culture

Slate is hiring a full-time culture writer. Ideal candidates will be insightful, funny, opinionated, game, and able to write in an array of modes, with a knack for mounting surprising, persuasive arguments and finding unexplored angles on familiar subjects. We’re looking for someone with excellent news sense and good judgment who writes sparkling copy. In any given week, our attentions may be captured by a controversial movie, a groundbreaking TV show, or a critical dust-up, and our culture writer should have a piqued interest in any and all of it. The position is on staff, with benefits, and can be based in Slate’s Brooklyn office, its D.C. office, or remote.

Key Responsibilities

• Writing and reporting on the biggest culture stories of the moment
• Generating ideas for quick analysis, essays, reported features, cover stories, and conversation-starting (or conversation-ending) work on movies, television, books, music, or, ideally, all of the above
• Operating as an integral part of Slate’s culture team
• Collaborating with writers and editors across the magazine on larger sitewide initiatives

Requirements

• A nimble mind and a provocative pen
• At least five years’ experience working as a journalist, preferably with online experience
• A deep well of story ideas and a sharp understanding of the cultural landscape
• Top-notch communication skills
