Justice Anthony Kennedy holds the vote. And it looks like he’s going to finish what he started.

The Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday on marriage equality that examined the question, “Can states ban gay marriage?” Which was quickly followed by “Can states that ban gay marriage refuse to recognize gay marriages from other states?”

Slate’s Dahlia Lithwick sat in the chamber Tuesday to hear the arguments first hand. In the video above, she outlines the most instructive moments in the case and where she thinks perennial wild-card Justice Anthony Kennedy will land.
