Parasite Pulls Off a Historic Surprise Victory at the 2020 Oscars

The 92nd Academy Awards finished off a largely predictable ceremony on Sunday night with one major surprise: Parasite beating out 1917 for Best Picture. While the acting categories went more or less as expected—Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt, and Laura Dern all collected their trophies—the biggest award of the night went to Bong Joon-ho’s thriller.

Parasite is not only the first South Korean movie ever to win any kind of Oscar, it’s also the first Best Picture winner in a language other than English. The bleakly comedic thriller, which follows a poor family as its members infiltrate the home of a rich one, also collected the awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, and Best Director for Bong.

The complete list of winners is below. Read more in Slate about the Oscars.
