Harmony Korine is headed back to the beaches of Florida, seven years after the release of Spring Breakers.
Beach Bum looks decidedly lighter than Korine’s last foray into Florida beach party culture, but one look at the neon-laced trailer and outlandish characters, and it’s easy to recognize Korine’s picking up where his last movie left off.
The film follows a lawless stoner novelist, Moondog (Matthew McConaughey), through his misadventures in Miami. The trailer gives us the kind of McConaughey we knew before the so-called McConaissance, amplifying his charm and easy smile and he drifts around Miami sporting loose Hawaiian t-shirts and spouting unsolicited insights—reminiscent of McConaughey’s own ability to turn interviews and Oscar speeches into moments of life lessons and soul-searching.
Korine told IndieWire, “I always like playing with the real actor persona, the pop persona, what’s authentic to the person, and then push it out to the stratosphere,” he said. “He plays with the idea of what people imagine him to be, and kind of takes it into another radical direction.”
The cast also features Jonah Hill, Zac Efron, Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Martin Lawrence, and Jimmy Buffett.
While Korine originally wanted Snoop to play himself, the rapper called Korine with an idea of his own. “He called me and said, ‘I have one change,’” Korine said. “I want to be called Lingerie. They call me Rie, short for Lingerie, because I’m smooth and silky. I was like, ‘That’s a great idea.’”
Beach Bum will be released in theaters on March 29, 2019.
