Samantha Bee opened Wednesday night’s Full Frontal by admitting that she’s terrified after reports of pipe bombs being sent to political figures and media organizations. While the media rushed to cover each incident, Fox News sent an alert explaining the package for CNN contained “some kind of white power,” a particularly unfortunate typo. “I don’t mean to be critical right now,” said Bee. “But autocorrect doesn’t change white powder to white power unless you type white power a lot.”
Still, as much as the current political situation makes Bee want to “flee to the bottom of the ocean,” she notes that there are still thousands of people who want to come to America, including a caravan of thousands of Central American migrants, most of Honduran origin, who are making their way towards the U.S.-Mexico border. Of course, Trump has reacted to this with fearmongering rhetoric and threats to deploy the military, and the story has given the personalities at Fox News what Bee called “massive election boners.”
Indeed, as midterm elections quickly approach, the right is using the migrant caravan to stoke anti-immigrant sentiments, with the president even claiming, without evidence, that there are criminals and, to double down on the racism, Middle Easterners among them. “This refugee’s baby must be a tactical baby,” said Bee sarcastically, over images of families among the caravan. Given the sheer size of the group slowly making its way to America, it’s easy to forget what they’re leaving behind. Trump isn’t the only one worried about violent gangs, since as Bee points out: “The caravan is literally running away from them.”
