Netflix has promised us 700 original shows and movies in 2018, and on Thursday we learned that The Daily Show’s senior political correspondent Hasan Minhaj will host one of them. Netflix has ordered 32 episodes of a weekly talk show hosted by Minhaj that “will explore the modern cultural and political landscape.”
Minhaj, who starred in his own highly praised Netflix comedy special Homecoming King, has been with The Daily Show since November 2014, when it was still hosted by Jon Stewart, and will continue to work as a correspondent until the end of July. He has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump, particularly on issues of immigration and Islamophobia, and hosted last year’s White House Correspondents Dinner. “I’m thrilled to be joining the Netflix family as the country braces for another election season,” Minhaj said in a statement. “And like you, I cannot wait to find out who Putin picks this time.”
Minhaj is not the only member of Trevor Noah’s retinue departing for Netflix in 2018: Michelle Wolf will also host a weekly talk show for the platform later this year. If I were Roy Wood Jr., I would start brainstorming some talk show titles right about now. It’s only a matter of time.
