Janelle Monáe Announces New Album Dirty Computer With Previews Ahead of Black Panther

Is this the return of Cindi Mayweather? Janelle Monáe announced Friday that she has a new album, Dirty Computer, on the way, her first solo album since 2013. The announcement was accompanied by a minitrailer, which is just 30 seconds long. “They drained us of our dirt and all the things that made us special,” a voice-over intones, as we catch glimpses of two people on a beach, Monáe on an exam table, and a group of people riding in a convertible while wearing giraffe masks. “And then you were lost, sleeping, and you didn’t remember anything at all.”

Dirty Computer’s announcement is getting a superboost: Not only does Thor: Ragnarok’s Tessa Thompson co-star in the trailer, it will also be shown in select theaters ahead of screenings of Black Panther. That seems fitting, given that Monae’s Afrofuturist visuals definitely complement those of Ryan Coogler’s superhero blockbuster. If only Monae could have joined Kendrick Lamar in crafting the film’s soundtrack.
