On the same day the first reviews for the highly anticipated Black Panther finally trickled online, Kendrick Lamar and SZA dropped the stunning video for the soundtrack’s lead single, “All the Stars.”
The colorful images, like the movie itself, are a visual celebration of African culture. Directed by frequent K. Dot collaborator Dave Meyers and the Little Homies, the footage is striking from start to finish: There’s Kendrick, standing majestically on a wooden boat over a sea of people, SZA floating on a brightly patterned river, surrounded by women dressed as flamingos. Later, the rapper strolls through ornate rooms of gold, and each chorus cuts to the singer dancing among a field of stars, which from afar form the continent of Africa. In the video’s most direct shoutout to the movie, Kendrick is seen walking with a pack of black panthers (who have their own thoughts about movie critics).
The soundtrack, featuring songs from and inspired by the movie, was curated by Kendrick alongside Anthony Tiffith and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, and includes songs by the Weeknd, Travis Scott, Khalid, Vince Staples, and 2 Chainz. The album drops Friday.
