Update, Oct. 3, 2017, 12:30 a.m.: This post was updated with the family’s confirmation of the singer’s death. It had previously been updated to reflect that CBS News retracted its earlier confirmation of Petty’s death.
Singer and songwriter Tom Petty has died at 66 after going into cardiac arrest on Sunday night.
Petty, as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a former member of the Traveling Wilburys, and as a solo artist, was one of the best-selling musicians of all time.
Petty’s Traveling Wilburys bandmate, Bob Dylan, told Rolling Stonein a statement: “It’s shocking, crushing news. I thought the world of Tom. He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.” Many other musicians took to social media to mourn the rock legend. We’ll keep updating this post as more come in.
Correction: An earlier version of this post misspelled the name of the band Traveling Wilburys.
