Ben Affleck’s had a weird couple of months. First, his heralded superhero tentpole Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice became both a bona fide blockbuster and a critical embarrassment, all at once. Then, he had to endure not only an interviewer’s question about the terrible reviews but a massive meme created from the video of his pained reaction. And with the just-released teaser for Affleck’s next film, The Accountant, it looks like things are about to get even more interesting.
The trailer, set to Radiohead’s “Everything in Its Right Place,” introduces us to Affleck’s Christian Wolff, a socially awkward math savant (well, if Matt Damon can do it …) who learned early on to fight back against bullies. As an adult, his obsessive nature and his comfort with secrets led him into a life of criminal abetment as the accountant for criminal organizations. Wolff now finds himself caught between the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by a hot-on-the-trail J.K. Simmons, a legitimate tech client represented here by Anna Kendrick, and his shockingly dangerous cartel associates. The mysteries unfold from there, and not without massive amounts of gunplay. Got all that? The Accountant shoots into theaters Oct. 14.
