For decades, films like Freaky Friday, 13 Going on 30, 17 Again, and Big have used body- or age-swapping plots to trumpet a single theme: the importance of family. Now that those gimmicks have been exhausted, we have Nine Lives, which takes the trope into the animal realm.
The film stars Kevin Spacey as Tom Brand, a Trumpian billionaire whose estrangement from his wife and child is further exacerbated when, on his daughter’s 11th birthday, he gets turned into a cat named Mr. Fuzzypants. That’s really all you need to know about this movie, but for good measure we have Christopher Walken as the mystical pet store owner and Jennifer Garner as Brand’s frustrated wife. Nine Lives is out Aug. 5.
