Ariana Grande brought down the house during a round of “Wheel of Musical Impressions” on Tuesday’s Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, following in the footsteps of Jamie Foxx, Christina Aguilera, and Adam Levine, among others. Grande kicked off the game with a breathy, melismatic impersonation of Britney Spears that left a little to be desired, but by the time she got to impersonating Celine Dion, she’d clearly found her groove.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone by now that Grande can, indeed, sing. But this exercise in spontaneity did show off a skill Grande has never been known for—articulation. And, like her animal-suited backyard singing session with Miley Cyrus for the Happy Hippie Foundation, it was also a chance to let loose and prove that she is not, in fact, a robot.
