Our first major peek at 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi has arrived: The red-band trailer for Michael Bay’s baffling depiction of the Sept. 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya is now online, and it’s … intense. The film will dramatize the events of the attack as recounted by writer Mitchell Zuckoff and the Annex Security Team in 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi.
Despite the requisite battlefield chaos and explosions, historical dramas just aren’t usually Bay’s forte—in fact, in his hands, they can go disastrously wrong (see: Pearl Harbor). The trailer for 13 Hours, however, visually resembles Ridley Scott’s excellent Black Hawk Down, which is promising. On the flip side, likeable goofball John Krasinski is mostly known for playing other likeable goofballs, both as Jim Halpert on The Office and in his film roles, so it’s a little unnerving to see him cast as a grizzled action hero.
