Nigeria Coach Appears to Snub U.S. Coach in Bizarre Post-Game Handshake Display

Nigeria’s forward Asisat Oshoala and coach Edwin Okon hold a news conference prior to a training during the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Vancouver.

Edwin Okon appears to be a big, old baby. The Nigeria coach seemed to refuse to shake his American counterpart Jill Ellis’ hand after his team fell 1-0 to the United States in the World Cup Group D closer on Tuesday, before awkwardly grasping at it as she walked away. The loss eliminated his team from the tournament and featured a red card for defender Sarah Nnodim that forced the Super Falcons to play with ten women for much of the second half. When Ellis went over to the Nigerian bench after the game for the traditional bit of post-match etiquette, Okon shook his head as she approached and reached out to him. Only when Ellis walked away did Okon lackadaisically clasp her departing hand in his. It could be that he didn’t see her coming and was just shaking his head out of frustration, but it certainly looked like a snub. You can watch the entire bizarre display below and judge for yourself: Is Edwin Okon a big, old baby?
