Beck Is Back With Another New Single, and Another New Sound

Beck has descended from the swaying, spacey clouds of Morning Phase to do some serious foot-stomping with “Dreams.” The single, released Monday, is the first from his just-announced new album, and it’s much more upbeat than anything on Beck’s mellow 2014 Grammy-winner.

Lyrically, “Dreams” may be an “I’m Only Sleeping”–style ode to closing your eyes and floating upstream, but musically, with its funky bass line and Nile Rodgers-esque disco guitar, it’s less a Beatles-style trip than an MGMT-inspired dance-floor anthem. According to Spin, Beck has already been hard at work on his new project for several years. No one has ever accused Beck of lacking artistic versatility, but if the rest of the album sounds this fresh, he might just outdo himself.
