The Creators of Animals on How They Mix Animation With Improvisation

Check out all Slate’s interviews from the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

Animals, an animated comedy TV series that recently premiered its first two episodes at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, follows various New York City creatures as they get into awkward (and sometimes deadly) encounters with one another. (You can watch a trailer for the show, which has brothers Mark and Jay Duplass on board as executive producers, below.)

We spoke with creators Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano about their characters’ unique mix of animal and human trailts and about how they make improvisation work within the realm of animation.

Interview booked by Raquel Bruno. Executive produced by Ayana Morali.
