Did You See This? Film’s Freakiest Flights

Still of Anne Hathaway in the freaky flight of 2008’s Passengers

You may be surprised to learn that the video below does not include Samuel L. Jackson yelling, “Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!” But Snakes on a Plane, though it offered  plenty of fun schlockiness, really over-egged the soup as far as airplane-bound horror goes. You don’t need to set reptiles loose in midair; the real terror of flight comes from the possibility that the vehicle itself will fall.

As the video below, by the folks over at Flavorwire, will vividly remind you. Prompted by Robert Zemeckis’ new film Flight, which, they say, has “among the most gripping, terrifying flying scenes ever put to film,” they compiled a chilling supercut of the most terrifying flight sequences in film history. Scored by what must be the world’s creepiest cover of John Denver’s “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” the assembled scenes—from Passengers, Cast Away, Alive, and Fearless—will stun even the most hardened frequent flyer. Watch it if you don’t have a plane to catch. (If you do, check out our recommended reading to quell aerophobia. Or maybe just check that out after you watch the video.)
