Years before Joaquin Phoenix may or may not have lost his damn mind , he got into a car accident in Hollywood and the German director Werner Herzog came to his rescue . Of the strange turn of events, Phoenix said back in 2006: ” There’s something so calming and beautiful about Werner Herzog’s voice. I felt completely fine and safe. I climbed out. I got out of the car and I said, ‘Thank you,’ and he was gone.”
Sascha Ciezata decided to animate Herzog’s heroic act, and the result is a strangely gorgeous little video , which includes the following narration from Herzog (whose voice is, indeed, calming and beautiful):
The moment I diverted my attention from him, he had picked up a cigarette and tried to light a cigarette. And I said to him, ‘Man, relax.’ And he said ‘I am relaxed.’ And I said to him, no you are not, because what I noticed, and what he was not really aware, was that gasoline was dripping throughout the car, and so I confiscated the cigarette lighter and crushed the rear window and got him out.
