While the world waits for Apple to announce its quarterly earnings, I thought this Horace Dediu chart showing that iOS and Android both continue to grow rapidly at the expense of nonsmartphones is very interesting. There’s some indication that Samsung may sell more Galaxy S4’s this quarter than Apple says iPhone 5s, but so far at least there’s plenty of cake for everyone.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s latest earnings report confirmed that the company is in trouble and Google’s earnings also disappointed. People love competition, but both of those are reminders that in the business world whole sectors can move up or down. It’s entirely possible for Microsoft and Google and Apple and Samsung to all sink, or else for three or four of them to all prosper. That kind of thing isn’t as fun as a rivalry narrative, but in the technology world in particular you’re not fighting over a fixed customer base.
