iPhone 5 Launch vs. iPhone 4S Launch

Apple sold more iPhone 5s in the launch quarter than it sold iPhone 4Ss, and this neat chart from Horace Dediu shows we can attribute that to the fact that the iPhone 5 was available on launch in more countries than the iPhone 4S.

That’s a stark contrast from the earlier launches where each one did much better than the previous one even on a per country basis. The iPhone 5 shows that Apple is by no means out of room to grow, but that growth is coming from expansion into more markets rather than deeper penetration of its core markets.
