Spitzer for GovernorThe powerful attorney general seeks New York's top job.

Today, New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer announced his plans to run for governor in New York's 2006 election. In an October 2004 "Assessment," Dan Gross evaluated Spitzer's career, in light of his plans to investigate the commercial insurance industry. Gross gave Spitzer high praise for his capabilities as a public servant: "In the past two years, in a state filled with big egos—Gov. George Pataki and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on the right, Sens. Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer on the left—Spitzer has emerged as the most consequential political figure. He may be America's most powerful politician outside Washington."
