This week, Princeton University approved a set of guidelines to combat grade inflation: From now on, A's will be awarded to less than 35 percent of students in undergraduate courses. Is Princeton's change necessary? In an October 2002 article, Jordan Ellenberg explains why, mathematically, grade inflation doesn't matter.
